Women and LGBTQI+

By Richard Chua

In private spaces: How voices are like?

It is pride month around the world. In Singapore, this weekend sees the organisation of Pink Dot, the country’s very own ‘pride day’. To put the two words in quotation marks reflects the uncertainty minorities lay claim to the day, even to feel proud of it. To say that Singapore is ‘unfree’ is simplistic. LGBTQI+ people live and move freely in Singapore physically, but not spiritually. With the law 377A hanging over their heads, sexual minorities would not be able to gain spiritual ease even though they are free to move around in Singapore. Likewise, for women, legal rights are given to women and girls in family matters. This piece of legislation applies to both men and women in Singapore. However, like all legislation, they do not provide peace of mind and spirit to live safely. Physical and financial safeties could be enforced, but mental and spiritual safeties need cultivation. A home -- a truly private and safe place -- is where imagination constructs a place of mental and spiritual safety. We thank you for coming by to hear the artists out in their artistic expressions. Let’s construct a safe space together.
