51 Waterloo Street

Losing

By Richard Chua

In a 2017 Straits Times report, artists who stayed at 51 Waterloo Street (named 222+51) expressed concerns about not being able to continue to reside in the art space. The lease was about to end and the building might get re-used as something else. Artists could only lament about its loss as they do not have ownership to space. The relationship between owning and losing are 2 sides of the same coin. However, in Singapore, artists do not own anything public but have everything to lose when spaces are being taken away from them. Wuwei Performance Series 4 looks at how an empty space in 51, Waterloo Street could be "owned”, be it temporarily. This private event features 10 artists who will attempt to own the space with languages of their own. At the end of the second day, a private party will be organised to celebrate the occupation.
